The following are the most common types options. Speak with your doctor about which option will be best for you.
- Implant
- TRAM Flap
- Prosthesis
It is possible for you to appear to have a breast even though yours has been removed. A implant may be inserted under your skin where you once had your breast. This popular option allows you to be able to wear the same clothes that you once wore. Your surgeon may be able to insert an implant in the same surgery as your mastectomy.
Your surgeon may be able to move tissue from your abdomen to form a breast where you had yours. This is a good option if you have extra body fat. Your surgeon may be able to do this option while you are in surgery for your mastectomy.
If a surgical option is not for you, you may decide to use a prosthesis to provide a more symmetrical shape to your chest area. You will be specially fit for your prosthesis. Once you have the perfect size, you will slide it into your bra. Because there will be swelling and pain after your mastectomy, you may need to wait several weeks before being fit for your prosthesis.
